The Ultimate Kansas City Weekend Guide: 3-Day Itinerary, Food Stops & Things to Do

Kansas City was never at the very top of my travel bucket list, but after spending a long weekend there, I can see why it makes such a solid weekend trip.
It has barbecue, museums, breweries, coffee shops, historic markets, free attractions, and enough to fill a few days without feeling like you need to sprint from place to place. I visited over Fourth of July weekend, so the city also had extra energy with FIFA events happening and fireworks to close out the holiday.
This Kansas City weekend guide includes exactly how I spent three days in the city, plus food stops, free and cheap things to do, and my honest thoughts on whether Kansas City is worth visiting for a long weekend.

Is Kansas City Worth a Weekend Trip?
I would say yes, especially if you are looking for a low-stress domestic city trip with good food, museums, breweries, and a few easy neighborhoods to explore!
Kansas City is not necessarily a once-in-a-lifetime bucket list destination, but I do think it is a great long weekend destination. It felt easy to navigate, had enough to keep us busy, and did not feel overwhelming in the way some larger cities can.
I especially liked that we were able to mix bigger attractions, like the National WWI Museum and Memorial and the Nelson-Atkins Museum, with more casual stops like River Market, coffee shops, barbecue, and a brewery tour.
If you are within a short flight or road trip distance, Kansas City is absolutely worth considering for a weekend getaway.
How to Spend 3 Days in Kansas City
Thursday Night: Arrival & Kansas City Barbecue
I flew into Kansas City on a Thursday night and started the trip the only appropriate way: with Kansas City barbecue.
Our first food stop was Jack Stack Barbecue, which felt like a classic sit-down barbecue spot and a great introduction to Kansas City barbecue. If you are visiting Kansas City for the first time, barbecue should absolutely be part of your itinerary.
After dinner, we kept the night pretty low-key since most of our exploring was planned for Friday and Saturday.
Friday: Museums, Union Station, Crown Center & Nelson-Atkins
On Friday, we started by parking near Country Club Plaza, where we found free parking, and then used the free streetcar to get around part of the city.
Since we happened to be visiting during a FIFA weekend, we walked through Fan Fest on our way to the National WWI Museum and Memorial.
This ended up being one of my favorite stops of the trip. The museum itself is really interesting, and even if you do not go inside, the views of the Kansas City skyline from outside the museum are worth seeing.
After the WWI Museum, we headed toward Crown Center, checked out some of the shops, and grabbed lunch at Unforked. Crown Center is also tied to Hallmark, which has deep roots in Kansas City, so it is a good stop if you are interested in that side of the city’s history.
From there, we walked through Union Station, which is one of those places that is worth seeing even if you only have time for a quick stop. The building itself is beautiful, and it is located near several other major Kansas City attractions, making it easy to add into an itinerary.
Later that afternoon, we visited the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, which is free and absolutely worth adding to your Kansas City weekend itinerary. The museum is beautiful, and the giant shuttlecocks outside are one of the city’s most recognizable photo spots.
Saturday: River Market, Barbecue, Books, Brewery & Firework
On Saturday, we started the morning at River Market and Historic City Market. We grabbed coffee at City Market Coffeehouse and spent some time walking around the area.
This is a great area to explore if you like markets, casual food stops, local shops, and starting the day somewhere that feels lively without being too intense.
For lunch, we went for round two of Kansas City barbecue at Char Bar. This had a different feel than Jack Stack. Jack Stack felt more like a classic sit-down barbecue restaurant, while Char Bar had more of a casual, social, outdoor hangout vibe.
After lunch, we stopped into Rainy Day Books, which was a cute independent bookstore and a nice slower-paced stop to add into the day.
Later, we did a Boulevard Brewery tour, which was a fun way to break up the afternoon. If you like adding local drinks, breweries, or more casual experiences into your trips, this is definitely worth considering.
Since it was Fourth of July weekend, we ended the night watching fireworks at Corporate Woods Founders Park in Overland Park.
Sunday
On Sunday, we kept things easy before flying home.
We grabbed coffee and breakfast sandwiches at Messenger Coffee, which was probably my favorite coffee stop of the trip. It had a great space, good breakfast, and was a nice slow morning after a packed weekend.
We also used the morning to do some planning for our next trip before heading to the airport and flying home.
Best Things to Do in Kansas City
National WWI Museum and Memorial
The National WWI Museum and Memorial was one of my favorite stops in Kansas City. The museum is really well done, and the views of the Kansas City skyline from outside are also worth seeing.
If you enjoy history museums, I would make this a priority.
Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
The Nelson-Atkins Museum is free, beautiful, and one of the easiest recommendations I would make for a Kansas City weekend trip.
Even if you are not a huge museum person, the grounds and iconic shuttlecock sculptures make this a fun stop.
Union Station
Union Station is worth walking through, especially if you are already near Crown Center or the WWI Museum. It is one of those quick stops that adds a lot visually to your itinerary without requiring a huge time commitment.
River Market and Historic City Market
River Market was a great Saturday morning stop. It is a good area for coffee, casual wandering, food, and local market energy.
Boulevard Brewery
The Boulevard Brewery tour was a fun afternoon activity and a good way to add something more relaxed to the itinerary.
Crown Center
Crown Center is a good stop if you are already nearby. You can browse the shops, grab food, and connect it with Union Station and the WWI Museum area.
Country Club Plaza
We used Country Club Plaza as a starting point because we found free parking nearby. It is known for shopping and Spanish-inspired architecture, so it can be a nice area to walk around depending on your interests and schedule.
Where I Ate and Drank in Kansas City
Jack Stack Barbecue
Jack Stack was my first Kansas City barbecue stop and a great way to kick off the trip. It felt like a more classic, sit-down barbecue experience.
Char Bar
Char Bar was my second barbecue stop of the weekend. It had a more casual, social, outdoor feel and was a fun contrast to Jack Stack.
Unforked
Unforked was a casual lunch stop while exploring the Crown Center area. It worked well as an easy break between museums and sightseeing.
City Market Coffeehouse
City Market Coffeehouse was a cute coffee stop near River Market and Historic City Market. It was a perfect starting point for exploring that area.
Messenger Coffee
Messenger Coffee was my favorite coffee stop of the trip. It had a great space, good breakfast sandwiches, and was a nice place to slow down before flying home.
Boulevard Brewery
Boulevard Brewery was a fun drink-focused stop and a good activity if you enjoy breweries or want something more casual to add into your afternoon.
Free and Cheap Things to Do in Kansas City
Kansas City can be a pretty budget-friendly weekend trip if you balance paid activities with free and low-cost stops.

One thing I appreciated about Kansas City is that we were able to fill a weekend without every single activity being expensive.
What I Would Do Again
If I went back to Kansas City, River Market would be one of the first places I’d return to. This ended up being my favorite stop of the trip. I loved the energy of the area, the historic market feel, the coffee stop at City Market Coffeehouse, and how easy it was to wander without needing a super structured plan. It felt like the kind of place where you could spend a slow morning grabbing coffee, browsing, people-watching, and trying different food spots.
I would also absolutely visit the National WWI Museum and Memorial again, especially if I were traveling with someone who had never been before. The museum was really well done, and the skyline views from outside were some of my favorite views of the city.
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art would also stay on my itinerary. It is free, beautiful, and easy to recommend, even if you only have a couple of hours to spend there.
For food and drinks, I would definitely make time for more Kansas City barbecue. I tried Jack Stack and Char Bar on this trip, but I feel like I only scratched the surface. I would also go back to Messenger Coffee, which was probably my favorite coffee stop of the weekend, and I’d consider doing another Boulevard Brewery visit or tour if I were traveling with people who enjoy breweries.
Overall, my biggest “do again” stops would be River Market, the National WWI Museum and Memorial, Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City barbecue, Messenger Coffee, and Boulevard Brewery.
Final Thoughts: Is Kansas City Worth Visiting?
Kansas City surprised me in a good way!
I would not necessarily call it a major bucket list destination, but I do think it is a really solid weekend trip - especially if you like barbecue, museums, coffee shops, breweries, and cities that feel easy to explore without needing a full week.
It is the kind of place I would recommend for a long weekend, a casual girls’ trip, a food-focused getaway, or an easy domestic city trip.
If you are planning a weekend in Kansas City, I would prioritize barbecue, the National WWI Museum and Memorial, the Nelson-Atkins Museum, River Market, and at least one good coffee stop!
